Cristen Shea (b. 1986, South Bend, Indiana)

Cristen Shea is an artist and surfer from Indiana who works in sculpture and computer graphics simulation to create uncanny interludes between the real and the virtual. Shea is an MFA candidate in Columbia University’s Visual Arts and has studied at the School of the Art Institute Chicago and Rhode Island School of Design. Shea was an artist-in-residence at Vermont Studio Center and Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart in 2018. Shea was a visiting artist at Hamtramck Ceramck in the municipality of Detroit, culminating in their debut solo exhibition in 2019. Their latest work responds to a year-long leave of absence from Columbia University spent surfing on Lake Michigan during the pandemic.
